入管の手続きではビザ（VISA）という言葉がよく使われています。また一方で、在留資格も一般にビザと言われますが両者に違いはあるのでしょうか。また、違いがあるとして何がどう違うのでしょか。
結論から言うと、査証（VISA）と在留資格は違います。
査証（VISA）とは
１・ 目的：日本に入国するために必要な許可
２・申請先：日本大使館や領事館
３・性質：申請者（外国人）の入国推薦状で、パスポートに記載される
４・効力：入国審査を通過した時点で役割終了となり、在留資格が与えられる
在留資格とは
１・目的：適法に日本に滞在するための許可
２・申請先：日本の入管庁
３・性質：日本国内での活動の根拠となるもの。内容や範囲が決まっており、一人に一つ付与される
以上のように、「査証（ビザ）」と「在留資格」は厳密には異なるものですが、便宜上、在留資格についても「ビザ」と 呼ぶことが一般的です。日本で予定している活動内容が在留資格のいずれかに該当することを証明する「在留資格認定証明書」は、査証（ビザ）取得の際に使用されます。このことから、査証（ビザ）も在留資格も内容は同じであることから、双方をビザと呼ぶようになったのではないかと思われます。
